“From now on there’ll be no more excuses!”

How many times have you heard that?  This might be a blast from the past – are we the only ones to remember our parents regularly uttering this phrase when we were little all those many moons ago? – but excuses definitely haven’t died out since we got ourselves mixed up in the world of business and grown-ups.

However, what we notice now is that many people don’t even realise that they’re making excuses.

Slide1Do any of these sound familiar?

  • ‘I’m too busy’ or ‘I haven’t got time’.
  • ‘They won’t be expecting my call, so I won’t phone.’
  • ‘ I don’t know how to do it.’
  • ‘They won’t want my product anyway.’
  • ‘It won’t happen because he/she won’t do it.’

And these are just some that we’ve heard in the last few weeks or so.

The simple matter of the fact is excuses get in the way of getting things done, and if you’re an excuse-maker this is likely to affect your business’s growth.  However, we’ve seen that it is possible to turn the excuses on their head so we encourage our clients to think how they might use this to add extra momentum to their business.

  1. ‘I’m too busy’, becomes ‘when can I do it?’ or ‘what help do I need to make it happen?’
  2. ‘They won’t be expecting my call…’ becomes ‘I’ll contact them to discuss how I might be of assistance.’
  3. ‘I don’t know how to do it’ becomes ‘who do I know who can help?’
  4. ‘They won’t want my product anyway,’ becomes ‘I’ll find out how my products could help them provide a solution to their challenges.’
  5. ‘It won’t work’ becomes ‘how do I find out if it will work?’

Do you make excuses?  What’s the best excuse you’ve ever come up with?  How can you turn the excuses you may make into something that will benefit your business?
